Seven countries pretending to be one continent
Belfast held the interiors for eight years. Everything else was borrowed from Croatia, Iceland, Spain, Malta, Morocco and Canada.
The production's home was the Paint Hall in Belfast, later renamed Titanic Studios, which housed the interiors of Winterfell, Castle Black, Vaes Dothrak, Riverrun and the Iron Islands for the entire run. Everything with a sky in it was shot somewhere else. Croatia supplied King's Landing from season two — Dubrovnik's medieval walls needed almost no set dressing — along with Meereen at the fortress of Klis and the Red Keep gardens at the Trsteno Arboretum. Iceland played everything north of the Wall. Spain arrived in season five and stayed: the Alcázar of Seville became the Water Gardens of Dorne, Girona became Braavos, and Gaztelugatxe in the Basque Country became the approach to Dragonstone. Malta had been King's Landing for season one before the move to Croatia, Morocco was Astapor and Yunkai, and Canada came in for the later seasons. Almost all of these places are public and most are free to walk into, which is why several of them now have a tourism problem the show created.
