59 Emmys, and what they were actually for
The most decorated drama in Emmy history won far more below the line than above it.
Game of Thrones holds the record for a drama series: 59 Primetime Emmy Awards from 164 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. The headline numbers hide where most of the wins came from. The show was an awards machine in the craft categories — visual effects, costume, production design, sound editing and sound mixing, makeup, stunt coordination — which is a fair description of what it actually was: a production problem solved at scale, every week, for eight years. The acting record is narrower and belongs mostly to one person. Peter Dinklage won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series four times for Tyrion Lannister, more than any other performer on the show, and he was in the cast from the first episode to the last.
